Tarrant water district sues Oklahoma

January 11, 2007-A Texas water district filed a federal lawsuit against Oklahoma Thursday, contending the state's moratorium on selling water to out-of-state organizations violates interstate commerce law.

The Tarrant Regional Water District in north-central Texas asks that the Oklahoma Water Resources Board be barred from enforcing the moratorium.

The moratorium was adopted by lawmakers in 2002 following a proposal to sell water from southeastern Oklahoma to an entity in northwest Texas.

The moratorium is to remain in effect until the state develops a comprehensive water plan, which is now expected to be complete in 2010.

Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson said it is up to Oklahoma state officials to decide which water requests would have a negative impact on agriculture, wildlife and lake levels in the state.
